From high school to health care; students start medical careers early

For these students, their medical career is already under way.

Seven seniors at Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical School in Easton have positions as medical assistants waiting for them at BNHC, thanks to an innovative co-op program with the school. They are the first group in the new program, and have spent class time the past two years learning firsthand how to be an MA at the health center under the guidance of Director of Nursing Patti Neal, and other BNHC medical professionals. “This is a great achievement,” said Patti. “Not only did they learn to be MAs, but five have already passed the Certified Medical Assistant exam, which is a hard exam.”

As a result, some of the students have already been working as MAs at BNHC. Also, all of them will be offered full- or part-time MA positions at the health center after graduation, but are free to pursue their careers wherever they’d like. “This co-op program has been a great success,” said Patti. MAs play a pivotal role in health care, with duties that include everything from recording a patient’s medical history, to measuring vital signs, to assisting providers with patient examinations. Our first group from Southeastern included Ashley Lema, Natalie Mendes, Jasmine Scott, Lauriane Andrade, Maura Texiera, Eliana Barros and Elle Dodd.

Congratulations! We hope to see You soon!
